Abbott offers a variety of fertility and pregnancy-related diagnostic testing options for the laboratory. Results of these tests can help health care professionals assess information related to specific conditions related to fertility and pregnancy.
FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, is excreted by the pituitary gland. During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, FSH fosters the growth and maturation of a woman’s eggs. At this point, FSH in the system prompts the production of estradiol by the follicle, and collectively these hormones work together in development of the egg.
During the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, a surge of FSH and luteinizing hormone (LH) occur. Shortly thereafter, ovulation begins. As part of this integrated hormonal process, FSH stimulates progesterone production. Both progesterone and estradiol help control the amount of FSH produced by the pituitary gland. This is important, as the ovaries’ response to LH is reliant on FSH.
